I stumbled on this great post at Digital Point called "How my site traffic went from 37 monthly visits to 14,657 monthly unique visits".
OK, so how did he do it? How did the blogger called Game Producer push up his traffic that much. Here are his main points in a nutshell along with a few comments by me.
1. Set a goal - "Just decide WHERE you want to go for now, you can figure out later the rest."
- This makes a lot of sense, but it is often very difficult to set goals for a blog or website until you have a feeling for the interest you can generate in your content. Still, it makes sense to have a focus and some goals, and keep reminding yourself of them so you don't get too far off track.
2. Update your site daily - That means adding content to your blog every day.
- This is easier said than done. One way is to create posts in series, for instance, "10 Ways to Create Great Blog Posts", but this sort of thing can start to feel a bit artificial after the first few installments. Another tip is to keep blog posts relatively short. Save some of your ideas for the next post. Or write a long piece and chop it into two or three pieces.
3. Focus on quality, unique content - the posts don't have to be earth shattering. Even if you're commenting on someone else's post or article, add your own comments and point of view.
- If you have lots of opinions then you're set. But if not, you'll be scrambling. Read other blogs, check out forums. Leave comments and use them as fodder for your own posts.
4. Provide sales statistics - give your readers an idea of how much they can make with specific kinds of projects. - "there will always be people who will want to know how much somebody can make in blogging/writing/selling shoes or whatever your site is about."
- I'm not sure about this. It is pretty difficult to say "here's how much you can make by blogging" or "I made this much on my last project." This just sounds like one more interesting bit of information you can provide your readers, but there are many other kinds of interesting information you could use instead.
5. Conduct interviews - find people in your niche and interview them. After your first few it will become much easier to get higher profile ones.
- I suspect the real value of this is that it gets you out of your little cocoon and into the real world where you actually talk to other people. It also helps you build on the traffic potential of your guests.
6. Promote using news submission, forum posting and press releases.
- This is a no-brainer.
7. Don't have too many ads in your site. Ads turn some people off.
- Hard to say. Some people might be impressed by ads, but generally I tend to agree. I also think that running ads - such as Adwords - detracts from your traffic potential. Why send readers off to look at somebody else's site?
