How do we get web traffic? Where does it come from?
Here's an important concept to understand before tackling the traffic thing:
There are two types of traffic - Search Engine traffic and "Other" traffic. Most of us know something about Search Engine traffic, but we’re not real clear on the "Other" traffic thing.
Search Engine Traffic results from scoring high for a variety of keywords in free searches. Someone does a Google search for "green widgets", and up comes your green widget site.
Other Traffic - comes from sources other than search engines. It comes from people clicking on links in articles you’ve written, from blog posts you’ve posted, from videos you’ve created, from blog comments you’ve submitted, from forum entries you’ve made, from affiliate links you’ve placed around the web, and from entries you’ve made in Web 2.0 sites like Digg, Facebook, Stumbleupon or Twitter.
Sometimes this "Other" traffic can be extremely targeted, and other times it can be a waste of bandwidth. But for most online entrepreneurs this "other" traffic is very important.
